Why You Must Be Aware Of The Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer

Early detection of the symptoms of prostate cancer is vital to the males reproductive health.

Performing a major function in the male reproductive system, the prostrate gland’s function is to secrete the thick fluid that makes up a part of the male semen.

Located below the bladder and in front of the rectum, the prostate gland starts out typically walnut shaped in young men.

However as men grow older the prostate gland will begin to enlarge.

The fact that the prostrate gland begins to expand is not a symptom of prostate cancer and does not necessarily mean that it is a result of the intrusion of cancerous cells.

The first warning sign that something may be amiss with the prostrate gland is during the act of urination.

Any male and especially those in their fifties upwards that begin to experience problems with urination should immediately contact their doctor or heath clinic for examination. Another early warning of potential problems with the prostrate gland is pain during or after ejaculating. These are the first symptoms of prostate cancer to be aware of.

Early Symptoms of Prostate Cancer:
Unfortunately, as is the case with many other forms of cancers that emanate from the abdomen, prostate cancer does not display any symptoms other than the ones mentioned above.

For this reason it is tremendously important that men in their fifties make it a rule of thumb to attend an annual screening. Males of African American origin or those who have genetic history of cancer should even begin to attend these screenings in their forties.

There are two common tests involved in prostrate cancer screening. The first and most widely used is a digital rectal exam (DRE).

In this test, the doctor inspects the prostate for signs of any uneven lumps or growths by inserting a gloved finger into the patient’s rectum.

The second phase of the screening is to carry out a specific blood test to check for the presence of prostate specific antigens.

If either of these tests proves to be abnormal, the next stage will be to carry out a prostate biopsy.

Symptoms of Advanced Prostate Cancer
The majority of prostate cancers grow so slowly that they never have sufficient time to metastasize outside the prostrate capsule.

Many older men suffering from this form of passive cancer of the prostrate, go through their lives unaware that they are even carrying some cancerous cells in their bodies.

However there are some forms of prostate cancer cells which are particularly virulent and spread very quickly. One of the first areas that cancerous cells spread into is the patient’s bones.

The immediate symptom of this deterioration is dramatic weight loss and increased tiredness verging on fatigue. As the cancer spreads further from the prostrate the patient will experience strong pain in their bones and there is even a strong possibility of the bones becoming fractured, even after a simple knock.

Once the cancers have been allowed to spread to this extent, the chances of a full recovery are very unlikely.
